60 Endangered Turtles Head Home

After some time getting health checks and a quarantine period we are very happy to announce that 60 of the 65 turtles that were rescued early last month were released to a safe protected area, they will now be free to be wild once again and free from human encroachment on their home.

The released animals were composed of two endangered species, the Black marsh turtle (Siebenrockiella crassicollis) and the Giant Asian pond turtles (Heosemys grandis). Both species are Vulnerable (VU) to extinction in the wild. The biggest on-going threat to Asian turtle species is the rising demand for the international meat trade, especially in China.
